I'm excited! :) In addition, the campus will be alive this week with many student leaders campaigning. I strongly recommend all of you (1) learn the experience, issues, and platforms of each candidate and (2) vote. Please advise your volunteers to do the same. Please keep in mind that you are, in part, representing the LA community in which you work, as next year's student gov't does have influence on your project's daily functions. I definitely know the ins-and-outs of UCLA undergraduate student gov't and each candidate's platform (I'm definitely a USAC junkie :) ), so feel free to speak with me! Also, the USAC agenda for the week is not attached to this email. I did not have a chance to PDF it last Friday. EXTERNAL EVENTS: Tuesday, April 24 [12pm-2pm, Kerckhoff Art Gallery]: UCLA Social Justice Speaker Series of the Office of USAC General Representative 3 Presents...Dahlia Wasfi-- Iraqi American Activist who has spoken out against the Iraq War. Wasfi was recently in Iraq for a three-month visit. She returned to the U.S. in March 2006, and based on her experiences, she has spoken out to end the occupation In 2006, she spoke to a congressional forum on Iraq: “ I speak to you today on behalf of relatives on my mother’s side — Ashkenazi Jews who fled their homeland of Austria during Hitler’s Anschluss. It is for them that we say 'Never again.' I speak to you today on behalf of relatives on my father’s side, who are not living, but dying, under the occupation of this administration’s deadly foray in Iraq. From the lack of security to the lack of basic supplies to the lack of electricity to the lack of potable water to the lack of jobs to the lack of reconstruction to the lack of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, they are much worse off now than before we invaded. 'Never again' should apply to them, too.” Wasfi has called for ending the occupation of Iraq, as well as pulling troops from countries such as Haiti and Afghanistan. | | | Commissioner's Corner Congratulations to Stephanie Chang--CSC's in-house candidate! Also, congratulations to Amigos for a clean office space! CSC '07-'08 staff applications will be out soon. Please look for an email later this week. Finally, for USAC this week, we will vote on changes of the composition of council. Namely, the USAC president proposes that we add 3-5 General Representatives. I have attached her proposal. Please be sure to bring around $120 to cover the cost of food and lodging. Anytime I think that things can't possibly go worse, they do. The wonderful UC Board of Regents, the body that makes decisions about EVERYTHING regarding our UC education, will be deciding on whether or not to RAISE OUR STUDENT FEES YET AGAIN. Why? I don't know. I mean... Really? The Legislative Analyst Office said that at most, we would need a 2.4% fee increase. What are the Regents thinking of doing? A 7% INCREASE. Um, Regents? Really? That doesn't make any mathematical sense. Can you stop raising our fees? I mean, you talk about trying to make the universities more open to the people of California, trying to keep the burden off of students (so you know, we don't suffer from extreme stress and whatnot trying to work 30 hours a week, take a full course load, and not DIE), but you go and do this? If you're as ticked off as I am, I really HIGHLY recommend you come to their meeting THIS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 in COVEL COMMONS. I'm down, are you? Attention Students! In the Spring Quarter, the Undergraduate Student Initiated Education (USIE) program is offering 16 innovative courses facilitated by your peers!
