cac proposals!

CAC proposal reading!  It's so time-consuming, but I'm learning so much more about all of your projects!  I've also been working on CSC's Base Budget and a few CS Day and Recruitment Carnival preparations.  Time to peace out because its almost 4am.

Announcements

**Make an appointment with Melissa Veluz-Abraham (mveluz@saonet.ucla.edu), your CSP advisor, to go over your CAC proposal for the week of August 8-12.  She’ll be going over your 2nd draft of CAC proposals that week, and she very much wants to meet with at least 1-2 representatives from your project to talk about your proposal and the upcoming school year.

**Pick up your edited CAC proposals from your boxes in the CSC office on Monday, July 25 at 7pm.  I will be holding office hours two times this upcoming week and as needed next week (let me know if this is needed) to help you decipher some of my staff’s editing in addition to help you with any other revision.  Find me in the office on Tuesday, July 26, 2-6pm and Friday, July 29, 1-3pm.  I’ll be able to find CSC work during that time regardless if people come for CAC help or not…so stop by and make sure I productively help you.

Did you forget to sign up for UCLA Orientation Tabling? Well, CSC is here to help as always.  We have a spot for your project or flyers from your project.  Just let me know as soon as possible so I can start talking to freshmen and transfer students about your project!

Bruin Bash Committee wants to know if you are interested in an Enormous Activities Fair week 0 fall quarter!  It's on Sunday, September 25, the first day of week 0.  This is a grrrreat way to start recruitment in the fall because there will be tons of people just looking to get involved in your project.  They'd like to know who is interested in participating; email them at bruinbash@ucla.edu. This is a great recruitment opportunity.  I’d take advantage of it.

Get involved in Americorps’ Students in Service Program.  The purpose of the Students in Service program is to meet critical community needs by engaging higher education students in service, and fostering within them an ethic of civic responsibility. Through the program, students are introduced to local, regional, and national service-learning opportunities, resulting in a regional network of student leaders committed to serving and strengthening their local communities. Students serve in partnership with schools and community-based organizations in the areas of Education, Human Needs/Services, Public Safety and Homeland Security, and Environmental initiatives. With rising tuition costs, and competing interests, Students in Service strives to make service a viable opportunity for students.  After completing 300 hours of service (including 240 direct service hours and 60 training/preparation hours) students are eligible for an $1000 Education Award which can be applied towards outstanding student loans or the cost of attendance at a college or university. Contact Angela Chen (achen@college.ucla.edu) for more details on how to get involved.

Send information to the makers of the “Volunteer Source.”  It’s a website that will have all of UCLA’s volunteer opportunities available for our students to look through, and the makers need your help!  It’s a website with information on all UCLA community service groups.  I.e., it should have information about yours.  Email the webmaster, Will Yu (cscmaster@gmail.com) to find out the information he needs so your group is represented!

The directors of WYSE for both this year and next year have been very motivated to start a male counterpart to WYSE.  They love their program and think it's making tremendous changes in girls' lives; however, there's an enormous missing link. While the young women in WYSE learn about the community's resources, learn about themselves, get to know cool, motivated college women, and become more invovled in their community, the young men are not receiving any of this education.  They feel that it is imperative that boys receive self-esteem training, have a place where they can discuss their sexuality, and learn about future options.  Poverty, teenage pregnancy, sexual assualt, violence, and lack of resources are all issues that affect boys as well as girls, and they are currently only taking care of half the problem conducting a program for exclusively young women.  While there are gender sensitive issues discussed at their weekly site visits, there is no doubt that boys at Mark Twain can learn a great deal from discussing their personal identity, sexual decision-making and future options among a group of motivated men from UCLA.  They need your help to get this off the ground, so talk to them if you are interested (uclawyse@gmail.com).

Upcoming Deadlines

**Monday, August 8: Second Rough Draft of CAC Proposal due [5pm, Farheen’s box in KH 405B and csccommish@yahoo.com].  It should be complete and edited.  Your second rough draft will be given back August 12 by 7pm.  Melissa will be viewing this draft.

Friday, August 18: Third Rough Draft due [5pm, Farheen’s box in KH 405B and csccommish@yahoo.com].  It should be complete and edited.  Your second rough draft will be given back August 22 by 7pm.

Wednesday, August 23-Friday, August 26: Mock CAC Hearings [times TBD, CSC office].  Part of the process of CSC preparation, we’ll be practicing CAC hearings with all of you.

Thursday, September 1: CAC Proposals Due [4pm, CSP Office].  Hopefully, your proposal is perfect by this time, and you are ready for your CAC hearing.  Also, Melissa must see several drafts and meet with your before she signs off the final proposal.  Please plan accordingly.

Upcoming Events

**Wednesday, August 3: CSC and CPO/SIOC present UCLA Funding and Budgeting 101 [6-7:30pm, SAC Basement].  Did you miss General Retreat?  Is your project struggling a bit with the CAC proposal?  Do you want to learn more about all of the funding that will available to your project next year?  CSC and CPO are teaming up to give a 1.5 hour workshop on UCLA funding for community service projects.  Come meet the Community Programs Office (CPO), eat free food, and learn about how you can maximize use of funding sources!  It’s short, informative, and we’re definitely planning to make it interesting.  Let me know if you are planning to go so I have a rough headcount of how many CSC representatives we will have.

Sunday, September 25: Bruin Bash [2pm-2am, IM field, LATC, and AGB].  To start the school year with a bang, USAC is putting on an Enormous Activities Fair, Giant Dance, Major Concert, and Studio Film.  It will be 12 hours of fun and madness, and they want our projects involved in the Activities Fair.  Be sure to contact the organizers at bruinbash@ucla.edu. If you’ve signed up very recently, the Bruin Bash Committee hasn’t updated me on the most recent sign-ups.  This is a great recruitment opportunity.  I’d take advantage of it.

Tuesday, October 1: CSC-SWC Recruitment Carnival [11am-2pm, Bruin Plaza].  SWC and CSC are teaming up to put on a huge recruitment carnival for SWC’s 10 committees, CSC’s 22 projects, and projects from CPO.  There will be performances by other student groups in addition to mass recruitment, free food, and fun games.  Sign-ups and a cool theme coming soon.
